Mercedes G-Class: BA3 Final Edition Swansong
Sat, 07 May 2011The Mercedes G350 BlueTEC BA3 Final Edition - the end of an era
The word ‘Iconic’ is bandied around far too much when it comes to cars. We’re probably as guilty as the next pack of hacks of attaching iconic to anything that’s been around for a while. But few would argue it’s not an epithet the Mercedes G-Class warrants.
From scaling rocky outcrops, moving the military or cruising down the Kings Road few, if any, cars can manage to do all with equal aplomb. Classless and timeless, with power delivery options from torquey turbo diesels to barking mad 5.5 litre AMG supercharged lumps, there’s always a G-Class to fit.
But the demise of the SWB G-Class is nigh, and Mercedes are taking it out with a limited edition model – the Mercedes G-Class BA3 Final Edition.
Titivations to mark out the BA3 include a smattering of AMG stuff like painted flared wheel arches, chrome highlights and 10-spoke alloys. Metallic paint comes as standard (you’d have to pick silver) and you get a few extra toys such as an electric sunroof, TPM and parking sensors.
The inside of the BA3 hasn’t been forgotten, so you get some nice leather trim, chrome bits, walnut wood trim (please say it’s a delete option) and some very un-butch ambient lighting.
Also on offer is the ‘Edition Select’ for the – not quite yet to be replaced – LWB G-Class. It titivates the LWB G with two-tone leather, piano-black trim, AMG exhaust, two-tone paint job (mirrors and bumpers ar black) and a set of black 18″ alloys. The “Edition Select’ package is only available on the V8 G500.
It’s very unlikely either the BA3 or the ‘Edition Select’ pack will be on offer in the UK. We asked Mercedes to confirm, but they haven’t got back to us.
If you feel like trotting of to Germany to grab a SWB G350 BlueTEC BA3 Final Edition it’ll cost you €90,511, and the G500 version €100,686. The ‘Edition Select’ pack is an add-on for the LWB G-Class at €6,735.
