This was a surprise – the Mercedes GLA 45 AMG Concept. With Mercedes take on a compact SUV with the new GLA revealed at Frankfurt in September, we’d expected Mercedes would put the 4WD power plant from the A 45 AMG and CLA 45 AMG under the skin of the new GLA to make a very hot compact SUV. But we hadn’t expected it yet.

But Mercedes has released a teaser video tonight of the GLA 45 AMG (although they don’t claim that’s what it is) and it looks very much a concept with big graphics and glitzy detail.

But it’s clear that GLA 45 AMG Concept is what the tease is all about, a GLA with the same 2.0 litre turbo as the A 45 delivering 355bhp and a 0-62mph somewhere better than 5 seconds.

We’ll no doubt get more detail from Mercedes when the GLA AMG debuts in the next few days, but we guess it will probably be followed up by a production version by Geneva 2014 and on sale later that year.

And it’ll probably cost the wrong side of £40k.
