Mercedes SLK-Class
Tue, 18 Jan 2011The third-generation Mercedes SLK (now 'SLK-Class') will make its world debut at the Geneva motor show next month.
While this all-new, third-generation model retains the overall proportions of the outgoing model, its design language is very different. Soft, subtle forms are out, particularly around its DRG, were a brutal grille, complete with bold chrome bar and star, takes center stage. Models fitted with the AMG styling package exaggerate its brutality with extremely boxy lower intakes. Despite its very upright bows, the new car's 0.30 Cd is an improvement over the outgoing model.
Its flanks are dominated by a fender-mounted air outlet, which is topped by a feature line that cuts sharply back through the door surface. This is juxtaposed by the rear of the car which, aft of the door, is much softer in its surfacing. How the car hangs together as a whole will be determined in Geneva.
Inside, the SLK takes obvious inspiration from the SLS AMG, with its upright IP, quartet of circular air outlets and deeply cowled dials. An extra layer of glitz is added by extensive red lighting and what appears to be the option of silver leather door cards.
