In 2015, Mercedes will pension off the SLS AMG to start production of a new sports car:the GT AMG. So, here’s the inevitable special edition version: the creatively titled SLS AMG Final Edition.
Available as a coupe and soft-top roadster, the Final Edition received a mixture of aerodynamic upgrades from the SLS Black Series, and luxury options to set itself apart from ‘normal’ SLS-kind.
The powertrain doesn’t get a token boost in power: under the bonnet is the same 6.2-litre V8 from the SLS AMG GT. Power stands at 585bhp, dealt to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. In this spec, the SLS reaches 62mph in 3.7sec, and maxes out at 199mph.
Mostly: you get bespoke alloys inspired by the design of the hardcore SLS Black Series, while the new aero package also apes the track-refugee Black. There’s a new carbon front splitter, carbonfibre bonnet, and a fixed rear wing in place of the standard SLS’s pop-up aerofoil.
Inside, the SLS Final Edition is lavished with the choicest extras from the options list, including contrast-stitched quilted seats and carbonfibre trim.
It actually is, unlike so many ‘special editions’: only 350 examples of this SLS tribute act will be made. Mercedes confirmed to CAR that instead of booking a set allocation for UK sale, Final Editions will be built to only customer order and imported depending on demand.
As for how much you’ll pay, international pricing hasn’t been decided. However, CAR understands the premium over a regular SLS AMG GT will be similar to that of a C63 507 Edition, which pinches details from the C63 Black Series and costs £10,000 more than a regular C63 AMG coupe.
With a standard SLS setting you back £165,030, we’d set aside at least £175,000 for your very own Final Edition SLS when it goes on sale in early 2014.
