Mercedes SLS Electric Drive takes to the track

Mon, 08 Oct 2012

Mercedes-Benz turned heads at the Paris motor show with the SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive. The cool blue supercar costs $540,000, making it Mercedes-Benz’s most expensive car in the dealership.

Mercedes also took the car to the Ascari race track in Spain. Lucky for us, AMG dropped a video on its YouTube channel.

The clip does have sound, but all you’ll hear is the whoosh of the tires and the whine of the electric motors as the car passes by. It uses four motors, one at each corner, for total system output of 740 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque.

The SLS Electric Drive Coupe produces its own synthesized performance sounds, which are pumped with a push of the “power” button. The sound is played through 11 speakers around the interior.

A range hasn’t been given yet, but the SLS Electric Drive will take about 20 hours to charge from a 230-volt outlet, and about three hours with a quick charger.
