Ahead of the Geneva Motor Show next month, images have surfaced of the ‘Hot’ new Mini Cooper Cabriolet John Cooper Works version.
The new JCW Mini Cab gets most of the tweaks the standard JCW Mini Cooper gets, including a more aggressive front end. But the heart of the JCW is what goes on under the skin.
The JCW puts out 211bhp, which is 38bhp up on the bog-standard Mini Cooper S. Remarkably, the Mini’s chassis copes with all this extra power pretty well, thanks in no small part to the tweaks to the suspension. You still get that Mini ‘Go-Kart’ feel, but at much higher speeds than you would think possible.
The power comes from a very well fettled 1.6 4-pot engine with twin-scroll supercharger, which apart from the decent output of 211bhp manages to deliver 192lb/ft of torque. Top speed is an almost scary 145mph, with 0-60 coming up in around 6.6 seconds, and it still manages a creditable 40mpg (right foot permitting!).
The JCW tweaks to the Mini do make it feel very special. It’s handling is crisper, its power is well-delivered and it looks aggressive without going over the top. It’s not cheap (it will be over £23k – for a Mini!), but this really is the ultimate Mini thrill.
