More drivers opt for speed awareness course

Wed, 02 Apr 2014

Drivers caught speeding are now more likely to take a driver education course than accept points on their licence, according to the latest government statistics.

953,428 motorists took a speed awareness course last year – a hefty increase over the 500,000 that took part in 2010.

This is partly down to the rise in speeding fines from £60 to £100 – taking a speeding awareness course usually costs around £85 (depending on the area), which means it’s now less rather than more than the cost of a fine.

It will also keep your licence free of points, which could mean a saving in insurance costs.

RAC technical director, David Bizley:

“This has to be good news for all those involved as it gives drivers a positive educational benefit, rather than simply adding points to their licences.”

To be eligible for a speed awareness course, motorists must have been caught speeding only moderately over the limit (for example, between 36 and 42mph in a 30mph limit) and have not already completed such a course within the last three years.

The course usually takes around four hours and doesn’t involve a test or any practical driving – but attendees need to pay attention to pass.
