NHTSA announces Kia, Hyundai recalls

Tue, 03 May 2011

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Tuesday that Hyundai Motor Co. is recalling almost 60,000 Kia Spectras from the 2004-2007 model years because of fuel-tank straps that can corrode over time.

According to NHTSA, one or both straps can break, letting the tank drop to the ground. The sparks and gas fumes could lead to a fire. The recall covers vehicles in northern states, where winter and salty roads can affect the straps. Kia will replace the parts with zinc-coated straps.

Hyundai is also recalling 12,690 2011 Kia Sorento and 6,169 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe SUVs that have two-wheel drive and a 2.4-liter engine, citing a transmission problem. According to NHTSA, the intermediate shaft may suffer excessive wear due to a misalignment with the output gear. If the condition persists, the transmission could be damaged.

The Kia recall will begin later this month, and the Hyundai recall will begin in June.

Hyundai owners with questions can call (800) 633-5151 for more information, and Kia customers can call (800) 333-4542.
