New 2015 Volvo XC90 impressive safety tech revealed
Tue, 22 Jul 2014The Volvo XC90 gets Auto Brake Function at Intersection technology.
Volvo are on a mission to prevent any deaths in their cars by 2020, and the new Volvo XC90 – due to be revealed shortly – looks set to push Volvo closer to that aim with an impressive array of new and sophisticated tech as standard. The technology on offer in the new XC90 includes two world first technologies, with the XC90 fitted with Run Off Road Protection Package and Auto Brake at Intersection Package.
The first of the two, Run Off Road Protection, is designed to mitigate the damage to you when you run off the road – whatever the reason – with the seat belts tightening to keep you in place and Volvo’s Safe Positioning helping prevent spine damage by reducing forces on the spine by up to 33 per cent by absorbing energy between the seats and cushions.
Not only that, the new XC90 also has Lane Keeping Aid, Driver Alert Control and Rest Stop Guidance to limit the likelihood of an off road accident in the first place.
Surprisingly, half the accidents in the US are road departure accidents and a third of all accidents involving serious injury or death in Sweden are single vehicle incidents, so the new technology should have a significant impact.
The second new safety technology for the XC90 is Auto Brake at Intersections which brakes the car if the driver turns in front of an oncoming car, a common scenario where drivers can pull out not realising there’s something coming.
Of course, the new XC90 also comes with a raft of other technologies designed to make life safer for passenegres and drivers including Blind Spot Information, Road Sign Information and Que Assist – which together make the new XC90 almost autonomous in slow-moving traffic – as well as Animal Detection, Adaptive Cruise, Road Edge Detection and Pedestrian Detection.
In fact, we’re starting to wonder if there’s anything the new XC90 can’t do?
