New Euro NCAP crash test results: Golf, Fiesta, Mito

Euro NCAP today announced the last round of test results before it overhauls the crash test results in February 2009. Eight cars gained the maximum five stars under the current rating system, but NCAP bosses warn that they will raise the bar next year.

Pick-ups again did badly with the Ford Ranger gaining just two stars for adult occupation, but family hatchbacks dominated. Cars to win the top crash test score were the Alfa Romeo Mito, the Ford Fiesta, Peugeot 308CC, Renault Megane, Honda Accord, Opel Insignia and Volkswagen Golf VI. 

However, there was criticism of the poor performance of cars in the new rear impact whiplash tests. Only the XC60, Mito, Golf, A4 and Insignia got the maximum score of 25 cars tested. The 308 CC, Kuga, Suzuki Splash and Citroen C5 fared worst in the whiplash tests.

Euro NCAP acknowledges that four- and five-star crash test ratings have become the norm. So to keep manufacturers on their feet – and to encourage them to improve child and pedestrian protection and not just focus on occupant safety – it is shaking up the tests.

From February 2009, Euro NCAP will include ratings for electronic stability control and give an overall percentage for a car’s total protection. Individual star ratings will be retained, but the new overall percentages will include pedestrian safety, whiplash tests and provision of ESP.
