New Ferrari F12 Berlinetta unveiled UPDATED
Wed, 29 Feb 2012Ferrari F12 Berlinetta is here
It’s the new Ferrari F12 Berlinetta – not the F620 – but it is the replacement for the 599 and heading for a Geneva Debut.
After leaks of images and photos of mock-ups what we thought would be called the F620 turns out to be the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta.
Despite the name attached to the leaks of the new F12 being wrong, the photos were pretty much right. The long, low profile of the 599 is still there, the nose does get more than a hint of the FF and there are cues from the California too.
But what matters most is what’s under the bonnet, and that’s a 6.3 litre Ferrari V12 with 730bhp and 690NM of torque, of which 80 per cent is available from 2500rpm all the way up to an 8700rpm red line.
That power translates in to a 0-62mph of 3.1 seconds, 0-120mph in 8.5 seconds and, say Ferrari, can lap their test track at Fiorano in 1:23 – faster than any other Ferrari road car – and reach 211mph.
That performance is not due just to the power jump from the 599 – an extra 118bhp and 83NM of torque – but also down to the F12 being a bit smaller, lower and 70kg lighter.
Ferrari has also used its F1 know-how to make the body more aerodynamic. The line running down the side of the F12 is called the Aero Bridge and directs air away from the bonnet to reduce drag and the Active Brake Cooling system has flaps at the front of the wings which only open at speed when brake cooling is needed.
The two seat Ferrari F12 will go on sale from its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show next week, and although Ferrari UK hasn’t give us a UK price for the F12 yet, if you don’t have £250k to blow don’t bother asking.
