Land Rover's new Freelander is more powerful, refined, spacious – and pricier. The range will kick off at £20,935, and first deliveries are due in November.
The new Freelander range is five-door only, and Land Rover is launching with the most potent engine versions: a 158bhp 2.2-litre diesel and a 229bhp 3.2-litre straight six petrol. That helps explain why the Mk2's starting price takes a big jump to beyond £20k. Land Rover is also promising a huge improvement in every area from its wannabe best-seller, and has hiked prices accordingly. The £20,935 TD4 S marks the start of the new range, with the I6 HSE petrol capping it at £33,990. The base TD4 S spec includes 16in alloys, air-con, single CD and six-speed manual transmission. Terrain Response – which primes the Freelander for off-road adventures – kicks in at the next trim level, GS. Highlights of this £23,435 grade include 17in alloys, rear parking sensor and auto lights and wipers. The sixpot petrol – which adds twin tail pipes and six-speed automatic transmission to the GS spec – kicks in at £26,940. Meanwhile, the range-topping I6 HSE, with full leather, 18in alloys, climate control and Dolby Pro-logic stereo, costs from £33,990.
