New Infiniti G Series to debut at 2013 Detroit Auto Show

Sun, 21 Oct 2012

The new 2013 / 2014 Infiniti G Series will debut at the Detroit Motor Show in January before going on sale later in 2013.

Infiniti may not have managed to make the biggest mark on the car landscape in the UK, but the news of a new G-Series is interesting because it seems likely it will offer a more interesting design and more Europe-focused powertrains.

The current Infini G37 comes as a 3.7 litre V6 and nothing else, which doesn’t exactly help sales in Europe where economy and CO2 levels are a bigger driver of sales than they are in Infiniti’s main market, the USA.

So Infiniti are expected to reveal plans to add diesel engines to the new G Series for Europe when it arrives in showrooms next year – which will make the Infiniti G much more appealing in Europe – and add in a four cylinder engine option too, probably sourced from Mercedes.

In terms of looks, we can probably expect a hint or two of the latest concepts from Infiniti – like the Emerg-E supercar we saw at Geneva – and a focus on more dynamism for Nissan’s answer to Lexus.

We’ve said for a long time that Infiniti need to push their cars as the performance and drivers choice of luxury Japanese cars, and it looks like they’re heading in that direction with the new G Series, especially as Infiniti’s design boss has gone on record as saying that the new G Series will be ‘much sportier and much more dynamic than the current car’.

The first chance we’ll get to see the new Infiniti G will be at Geneva in spring 2013, but with press days for the Detroit Motor Show kicking off on 14th January 2013 we should have more detail then – if not before.
