New MINI One revealed: Geneva Motor Show

The big news for the Geneva Motor Show and MINI – apart from the display of the new MINI Cooper and Cooper S – was supposed to be the MINI Clubman Concept, a first look at the new Clubman in all its over-sized glory. But lurking on MINI’s stand in Geneva is also the new entry-level MINI – the new MINI One (pictured above).
With a lesser spec than its siblings, the new MINI One comes with a body coloured roof, less butch front bumper and smaller wheels and an all round pruned-down spec.
The petrol engine option for the MINI One is a 1.2 litre 3-cylinder with 101bhp and 133lb/’ft of torque, with an official economy rating of 61.4mpg and 108g/km emissions (as long as you opt for the 15″ steel wheels) and can scoot to 62mph in 9.9 seconds.
Standard gearbox is a six-speed manual, but you can opt for a six-speed auto instead, although why you would on a 3-pot MINI One we can’t imagine, especially as it will cost you more, probably be slower and will be less economical.
And although the 1.2 litre 3-pot should be the engine of choice, diesel-obsessed buyers in the UK will probably opt for the new MINI One with the 3-pot diesel from the Cooper D down-rated to 94bhp (although a quick visit to a chip specialist will soon correct that) offering a lethargic 11 seconds to 62mph and 83mpg.
No prices or on sale dates for the new MINI One in the UK yet, although it’s unlikely to be much more than the current starting price of £13.5k when it arrives later in 2014.
