New Maserati Ghibli Leaks UPDATED: Now Official
Tue, 09 Apr 2013The new Maserati Ghibli – the new, smaller version of the Quattroporte – has leaked ahead of a reveal later this week and a debut at the Shanghai Motor Show.
Update: Maserati has now officially revealed the Ghibli with the same three photos we published.
Apart from the information below, the only other confirmation is that the new Maserati Ghibli will also be offered with the first diesel engine in a Maserati, allowing it to compete with cars like the Audi A6 and the Jaguar XF 3.0 litre Diesel S.
Last week we had the first tease for the new Maserati Ghibli, but all we got was a blue sheet covering a mid-sized saloon car with a big nose.
Maserati were planning to reveal the new Ghibli later this week ahead of a debut at the Shanghai Motor Show, but a Czech forum has leaked the first photos ahead of Maserati’s plans (in case you couldn’t work that out from the big watermark splodge in the middle of the pictures).
What we see is a a four door coupe with something of a statement nose, which does a pretty good job of throwing in a few cues from the original Ghibli and mixing them with the Ghibli’s big brother – the Maserati Quattroporte – with its swollen wheel arches, crease lines and grill all looking familiar.
Inside seems to be a sportier take on the Quattroporte, with a similar instrument cluster, more sculptured dash and a large Infotainment screen dominating the centre. Lashings of black and red leather and carbon fibre mark the Ghibli out as the muscular take on the Quattroporte.
Under the bonnet will be all the same drivetrain and power options from the Quattroporte, with a V6 Turbo, V8 twin Turbo and the optional 4WD all expected to be on offer in a car Maserati hope will take some of the market share from cars like the BMW M5, Jaguar XFR and Mercedes E63 AMG.
And actually, if it drives as well as it looks, the Ghibli should be in with a fighting chance.
