The new Mercedes C-Class arrived at the Detroit Auto SHow in January and looks to be properly appealing – a mini S-Class and strong competition for the BMW 3-Series. Now we get the 2015 Mercedes C-Class Estate, which takes the new C-Class in to the load-lugging sector with a capacious take on the fine attributes of the C-Class saloon.
A C-Class saloon from the B-pillars forward, the new C-Class Estate grows to 4702mm and gets a 2840mm wheelbase, enough for an extra 45mm of legroom in the back and with 490 litre of room for stuff in the boot with the seats up and 1510 litres with them folded away, and there are more options in between with new seats that split 40/20/40 and can be moved electrically.
The boot lid also gets clever with assisted opening and the option of shaking your foot around under the bumper to gain access.
Engine choices at launch will be a apir of diesels – a 2.1 litre with 168bhp in the C220 and a 201bhp version in the C250 BlueTec – and a single 2.0 litre petrol with 179bhp in the C200. 2015 will see further engine options – including hybrid and six-pot versions, and the option of 4WD (although we’re not sure Mercedes will offer it in the UK).
Just like the C-Class saloon – from which the Estate borrows it interior – the C-Class Estate gest a choice of driving modes - Comfort, Eco, Sport, Sport+ and Individual – and variable steering, and the standard and sport suspension options are supplemented by the optional AirMatic suspension with self-levelling.
The new Mercedes C-Class Estate will go on sale in September 2014, and prices will probably be around £1500 more than the equivalent C-Class saloon.
