Jaguar plans BMW 3 Series rival
The announcement of the name is the first big official step in rolling out the vital new Jaguar, which will go on sale in 2015. More news of the new model will flow throughout the year and first drives are expected before 2014 is out.
Dr. Speth also confirmed at a pre-show Jaguar Land Rover press briefing that the firm’s all-new in-house engine range will be called Ingenium. The new motors, which will launch in the baby Jaguar, will be made at Jaguar Land Rover’s all-new engine facility in Wolverhampton.
This, Dr. Speth later told MSN Cars, is proof of the company’s “absolute commitment to the UK, as a UK company.”
New facilities are being planned around the world but these will be to support JLR’s growth plans, not displace any work in the UK. “We continue to invest billions in the UK, in research, engineering and production.”
“Jaguar DNA”
MSN Cars also asked Dr. Speth how the new baby Jaguar will compete against the huge strength of the German competition – including models such as the mighty BMW 3 Series, the all-new Mercedes-Benz C-Class and a future new Audi A4.
“By harnessing the Jaguar DNA,” he said. The new Jaguar won’t try to copy German brands, but will instead focus on ‘seductive design, innovative technology and intelligent performance’.
It will be based on an all-new, all-aluminium platform called iQ[AL] – the only all-aluminium car ever built in this sector – and, added Dr. Speth, will offer a range that includes a 186mph model and a sub-100g/km CO2 version.
“It will become a benchmark in its sector.”
Join MSN Cars this lunchtime for the first reveal of the new baby Jaguar’s name – and look out for a world first glimpse of the new car that the firm hopes will beat the class-leading BMW 3 Series…
