Nissan Note Boat makes splash

Before you get carried away the the thought that Nissan has somehow turned out a new Note that can turn itself in to a boat, they haven’t. Instead, Nissan’s PR has decided to bolt the new Note to a floating platform to demonstrate the versatility and some of the technology of the new Note.

Nissan went of to Eton Dornay Lake – scene of some of our remarkable rowing feats in the 2012 Olympics – with a modified Note with a sliding single stroke seat for a rower to allow the Note – with its wide opening doors – to accommodate an oar poking out of each side.

To make sure the rower could see where they were going (remember, they face backwards in a rowing boat) they used the Note’s Around View Monitor for a 360 degree view of the area around and the rear view camera to get Lane Departure Warnings, Blind Spot Warnings and Moving Object detection.

It’s a clever way to show the new Note’s technologies serve not just a driver on the road, but a rower with the Note acting as a virtual cox too.

To make it all a bit more interesting, Nissan enlisted Team GB rowers and 2012 gold medallists Helen Glover MBE and Sophie Hosking MBE, and Polly Swann who partnered Glover to win the 2013 World Rowing Championships womens’ coxless pairs.

Polly Swann said:

It’s certainly a novel experience rowing down Eton Dorney Lake in a car. I’m amazed at how wide the doors open – I could achieve almost a complete rowing stroke, which produced more than enough power to push the Note down the lake.

And Helen Glover added:

I wish I could have a camera system like this in some of my races – it certainly would make seeing where my rivals a bit easier!
