Now even Audi slows production
Sun, 25 Jan 2009We’ve written endlessly about the slow down in car production worldwide. All the top end manufacturers have made savage cuts in jobs and production. But there seemed to be one company bucking the trend – Audi. But even the mighty Audi is now starting to feel the pinch.
Audi has announced that it is to slow production at two of its plants, Neckarsulm and Ingolstadt, for six days, affecting some 20,000+ workers.
Audi - the slowest car they've ever made. It's even slower now!
Now this is nothing like the cuts that companies like Jaguar and Aston are having to make. It looks like a very sensible precautionary move my the German company. They are obviously looking at lower sales than before, but a short time production for 6 days, even if it affects 20.000+ workers, is not especially savage.
Audi has enjoyed a real boom time of late, and has just posted the best ever year on year sales for 2008 – breaking the 1,000,000 cars sold for the first time, despite the slow down in the world economy.
And Audi has probably the broadest range of quality cars of any of the premium manufacturers, and is as insulated as it is possible to be from the slow down in sales. They will continue to take sales from other makers simply because of the quality of their products.
But if even Audi is slowing down, what hope is there for the likes of GM and Chrysler, even with State Aid?
