One Lap of the Web: Cars of Concours d'Lemons, Rally New England and a Hudson Italia

Wed, 21 Aug 2013

- More than 80 unique cars are trucks have just finished Rally New England, traveling 1,300 miles through the northeast, all for a good cause. Hooniverse's Robby DeGraff took part in the rally as part of a film crew, and shares his journey with readers. The rally ran from Ithaca, N.Y., to Saint John, New Brunswick, and raised money for Camp Sunshine, an organization that invites children with life-threatening diseases and their families to have fun at camp for a week for free.

- You can find anything at Concours d'Lemons, as our own Blake Z. Rong did last weekend in Monterey. Turns out that AMCs and Peugeots were actually the more respectable cars gathered at this popular annual event. Check out the full gallery here.

- Even though the Monterey auctions have just wrapped up, one seller decided that eBay Motors' listing fees were a bit more reasonable than at the major auction houses, and is selling a 1953 Hudson Italia Aluminum bodied prototype on the 'bay. A rare coupe-styled by Ghia, only a couple dozen examples were made.

- Land Rover Expedition America is entering its final stage, having crossed the country from North Carolina to Utah. The team of three Land Rover LR4 is following a route created by off-road motorcyclist Sam Correro, and one that overlaps with the routes that pioneers have taken when settling the west. The team is now crossing the Black Rock Desert, and just narrowly avoided an event that would have seriously delayed their progress; a river near Salina, Utah, had swollen and washed away part of the route, moving at head-height and at over 20 miles per hour. While it would have been an interesting challenge to undertake to cross a flooded river, Land Rover Expedition America participants are glad that they avoided that potentially dangerous trial.

- Just about everything can be drifted, though we haven't seen too many KamAZ hoonage videos. We've heard the 9-ton Russian-built 6x4 KamAZ 55111 dump trucks are pretty easy to drive, but it still takes skill to get one of these sideways on an icy road.

- Monterey auctions are great and everything, but we couldn't help but admire this 1971 Plymouth Fury Custom Suburban Wagon on Bringatrailer, in absolutely unreal condition and with just 14,000 on the clock. And it's extremely brown too.
