One Lap of the Web: Hit the salt at Bonneville, dream car junkyard sold and the BMW 507

Mon, 19 Aug 2013

-- Known as the junkyard where GM dream cars went to die, Warhoops salvage yard has been sold. The yard, located not too far from GM's Warren, Mich. Tech Center, shot to stardom when four forgotten concepts -- the 1955 Cadillac LaSalle II roadster and sedan, the 1955 Chevrolet Biscayne, and the 1956 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham Town Car -- were rescued in 1988 by collector Joe Bortz in 1988. Get the whole story at Hemmings.

-- The elegant but expensive BMW 507 roadster was an odd car to emerge from a Germany in the process of reconstruction. At Petrolicious, Andrew Schneider relates the factors that brought the 507 into being. Of course, there are plenty of photos to distract you as well. BMW may have lost money on every 507 it built, but we're sure glad the accountants managed to look the other way long enough to let a few sneak out of the factory.

-- If you're crazy about oddball Japanese cars, you don't want to miss out on the customized 1989 Nissan Pao featured at Bring a Trailer. The little Pao is slightly larger than a kei car but still retains much of the quirky charm of those little scooters -- and its retro-cool styling has aged far better than that of, say, the PT Cruiser. It's not quite 25 years old, which means you won't be able to move it from its current home in Vancouver to the United States just yet, but it's a great example of the sort of car we'll be able to freely import in just a few months.

-- Couldn't make it out to Bonneville this year for Speed Week? Neither could we. Larry Chen's gorgeous photo essay helps take the edge off -- check it out at Speedhunters. We can almost taste the salt...
