One Lap of the Web: Porsche 917, a karting brawl and the premiere of Drive
Fri, 06 Jun 2014
The Porsche 917, in Gulf livery, is one of most famous racers of all time. Only 65 were built between 1969 and 1973. Petrolicious is looking at #13, which was one of the first 25 examples built. Porsche actually underestimated the time it would take to make the 25 cars that the Commission Sportive Internationale (precursor to the FIA) required for racing and had to fake its way into compliance. Thankfully, the inspectors didn't ask to drive any of them. Check out the full story here.
A brawl broke out at Crossroads Speedway when a few go-karting enthusiasts dropped their gloves and helmets during a break in the action. One man apparently had enough of his competition, jumped out of his kart and flipped over his neighbor's. Chaos then ensues. Check out the full story at Jalopnik.
Auto journos Chris Harris, Matt Farah and Mike Spinelli took a few supercars to Monaco for the premiere episode of Drive on NBC Sports. The trio picked the Ferrari F12, Mercedes SLS AMG and the new McLaren 650S for the trip. Check it out on Drive's YouTube channel.
