One Lap of the Web: The ABCs of Indy

-- Indy is full of tradition, and ABC is full of Indy. Having covered the Indy 500 for the past half-century, ABC is as "back home again" as Jim Nabors and milk and the forthright assumption that the Indianapolis 500 is the Greatest Spectacle in Racing -- a tagline announcer Charlie Brockman introduced to the world -- which it is.
-- How do you design brakes that can stop a 1,000-mph car? Very carefully. And with plenty of science.
-- It was Memorial Day this past Monday. Did you remember your Mercedes-Benz barbecue set? You didn't? How can you have a successful Memorial Day without the $78 five-piece barbecue set emblazoned with the vintage Mercedes star and crest? Everything is ruined. This is why we can't have nice things.
-- A man in Portland drove through a tunnel holding his breath, fainted and stuffed his 1990 Toyota Camry into a Ford Explorer. Nobody was gravely injured, thankfully. An Oregon State Trooper said he wasn't sure why the man was holding his breath, "but some people hold their breaths in tunnels as part of a game or superstition." Is this going to be a new and popular activity, like Marc Maron's thrill with texting? Don't hold your breath ... and don't text while you're driving, either.
