One lap of the Web: Millennials, espionage and vintage racing

Thu, 02 May 2013

We spend a lot of time on the Internet -- pretty much whenever we're not driving, writing about or working on cars. Since there's more out there than we'd ever be able to cover, here's our daily digest of car stuff on the Web you may not otherwise have heard about.

-- Talkin' 'bout my generation. Statistics show that Generation Y, aka Millennials, aren't buying cars. The blame has been cast on smartphones and social media, but Jalopnik points out that it might be something more basic -- money.

-- Back to basics. Holland infrastructure developers are asking why we can make cars "smart," but leave roads "dumb as bricks." Glow-in-the-dark road markings, interactive streetlights, battery-charging e-lanes and illuminated foul-weather warnings are just some of the infrastructure upgrades being considered.

-- The Spy Who Loved Me. The Detroit News reports that a former General Motors engineer and her husband were sentenced to prison after being convicted of stealing hybrid-vehicle technology from the automaker for potential use in China.

-- LeMans quick lap. Autoblog posted a throw-back dash-cam video of LeMans winner Mike Hawthorne as he takes a quick lap around the Circuit de la Sarthe in 1956. Hawthorne is avoiding bicyclists, cars and takes the Mulsanne Straight at 185 mph.
