Peugeot are bringing the iON EV to Frankfurt

Latest to join the electric car party is Peugeot, who have announced they will be showing the Peugeot iOn, which is to all intents and purposes a re-badged Mitsubishi i-MiEV.

No question that this – like all these little electric cars – is a city car only. It ‘boasts’ a range of just 80 miles on a full charge, but that’s enough if you’re only using it in town. Peugeot reckons you can charge its lithium-ion batteries to 80% of capacity in just 30 minutes. But don’t get too excited. That’s dependant on having a high-powered rapid-charge system fitted at home. If you don’t, it’ll take six hours to re-charge.

Power comes from a 47kw electric motor with 133lb/ft of torque. Peugeot didn’t bother telling us the likely acceleration  of the iON (nor did Mitsubishi with the i-MiEV), but they do say it will do 80mph.

Peugeot bare claiming the iON as part of their strategy to reduce their carbon footprint. The iOn will hit the market in 2010 (no price given, but the i-MiEV is well over £20k in Japan) and the Peugeot 3008 Hybrid, featuring 200bhp, four wheel drive and emissions of 99g/km (there’s that 99g figure again) will appear in 2011.
