Police launch summer World Cup drink-drive crackdown

As the weather improves it might seem tempting to spend some time in the beer garden, but police have warned that you will get caught if you get behind the wheel while over the limit.

The Association of Chief Police Officers is launching a month-long drink and drug enforcement campaign, which will see an increase in roadside tests across England and Wales.

In last year’s crackdown, 100,892 drivers were breathalysed – with 5,170 found to be over the limit.

If you’re caught with more than 35 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, you could face a jail sentence and a driving ban.

Road safety charity Brake has said that the World Cup could see an increase in people drink-driving, and urged people not to risk driving after a drink.

Brake deputy chief executive, Julie Townsend:

“Drink driving remains one of the biggest killers on our roads, yet every year thousands of drivers risk it. That’s why it’s so important that the police are out in force clamping down on this selfish behaviour, now and throughout the year.

“Even if you’re under the limit, you can still be a danger: even very small amounts of alcohol significantly affect your judgement and reactions at the wheel. We need everyone on board with the message that motor vehicles and alcohol – in any amount – don’t mix.”
