Porsche Cajun: the 2-door coupe crossover

The Porsche Cajun Coupe Crossover

It’s only a week or two since we finally discovered for certain that Porsche will be building an SUV / Crossover based on the Audi Q5. And we also discovered that instead of being the Porsche Roxster – which was always a bit of joke name – Porsche’s trendy crossover would be the Porsche Cajun. And yes, we fully expect the Porsche Chilli and the Porsche Jalapeno to join in at some point in the future.

So the Porsche Cajun is going to get built but, contrary to all expectations until now, it’s not really going to be a baby Cayenne. Instead, it’s will be more of a butch coupe crossover. Think a Porsche version of what we expect to be the BMW X4 (a smaller version of the X6). And why so, you may ask? Internal politics is the answer

It seems – at least according to Auto Bild and Georg Kacher (whose credentials we wouldn’t question) – that VW are concerned that a Porsche Cajun would steal sales from the Audi Q5. Not sure we really see that, but I guess it rather depends on just how performance oriented the Cajun is.

But we wouldn’t be surprised if a bit of this reluctance to build a smaller Cayenne is more about concerns that it would steal sales from the Cayenne itself. And that really wouldn’t do. After all, the Cayenne (and now the Panamera) is a cash cow for Porsche which allows mit to play at defying the laws of physics (and some would say time and space also) with the 911.

Whatever the reasons, it now seems clear that the Porsche Cajun will be a 2-door Coupe Crossover when it arrives in 2013, just in time to steal sales from BMW’s X4.

Probably.
