Range Rover Evoque Convertible unveiled
Fri, 24 Feb 2012The Range Rover Evoque Convertible debuts at Geneva
Land Rover has revealed the Range Rover Evoque Convertible, which will debut at Geneva. Land Rover say it’s a concept, but it looks like it’s heading for production.
It may not be the world’s first SUV Convertible (that dubious honour goes the the Nissan Murano Convertible) but the Range Rover Evoque Convertible is certainly the world’s best looking SUV Convertible.
The reveal today of the Evoque soft top is a bit of a surprise, although we knew Land Rover had a new model up its sleeve for Geneva 2012 (our source said it was the 2013 Range Rover – which now looks less likely with the reveal of the new Evoque Convertible), but it’s a brave way to extend the Evoque success.
The Evoque Convertible is based on the Evoque Coupe and has a canvas roof (although we haven’t seen that yet). And apart from a couple of thumping great RSJs stopping the back from parting company with the front, the Evoque convertible is very much an Evoque.
That means lots of leather on the inside, Land Rover’s Terrain response, a choice of diesel and petrol engines and all the kudos the Evoque Coupe has already acquired in its short life.
Having gone after the premium saloon and coupe market with the existing Evoque models, Land Rover are now after the premium convertible market, with the Evoque Convertible aimed right in the firing line of yummie-mummie favourites like BMW’s 3 Series Convertible.
When (and to be accurate, we should say if) the Range Rover Evoque Convertible hits the showrooms it will probably command a 15 per cent premium over the coupe Evoque and only come – at least initially – with top end trim and engines.
