Renault 4 Ever design competition
Fri, 01 Apr 2011DesignBoom has teamed up with Renault to create a unique design competition. With the Renault 4 entering its 50th year, the aim of the competition is to redesign and recreate the classic R4.
The free-to-enter competition is open to anyone, not just design students and professionals. Split into two parts, the brief asks entrants to re-create the ‘look and style' of the R4, in an attempt to capture the functionality and minimalistic philosophy of the original whilst respecting its identity and iconic status.
When the R4 was launched in 1961, the car was a mass-production model. Its innovative, low-cost but effective design solution was intended for the entire population of not just France or Europe, but the World. When production ceased in 1994, there had been 8,135,424 cars built for more than 100 countries.
The character of the original R4 was just one part of the brief. The second was to embrace innovative design and technology for sustainable mobility. The original R4 utilized the technical know-how of its time to create a car with low running costs and the ability to adapt to all types of use, with its revolutionary approach to body design allowing several different versions – including a van, a four-wheel-drive vehicle and a cabriolet.
Prizes for the R4 competition will see third place awarded €3000, second place €5000, whilst the winning design will receive a Renault 4 that Michel Leclère drove in the 2011 historic Rallye Monte-Carlo.
