Renault Megane Renaultsport 275 Trophy-R Special Edition celebrates Nurburgring record

We knew Renault were planning to take the Megane Renaultsport 275 Trophy to the Nurburgring to have a crack at the FWD production car record and wrestle it back from the SEAT Lean Cupra 280. After some extreme weight saving measures – and some chassis tweaks – Renault managed to push the 275 Trophy round the Nordschleife in 7min 53.4 seconds, beating the SEAT’s time of 7min 58.4 seconds to take the record (video below).
But not being one’s to miss a marketing opportunity, Renault has decided that they should celebrate the Nurburgring record with a new limited edition Megane – the Megane Renaultsport 275 Trophy-R Special Edition.
Power for the 275 Trophy-R comes from the same 2.0 litre 4-cylinder turbo petrol as the regular Megane 275 (which has 275 PS) complete with the standard Cup chassis and limited slip diff but gets an Akrapovic exhaust, Allevard composite springs at the front, adjustable Ohlins road and track dampers and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres ( first on a production FWD car).
The extra performance of the Megane Renaultsport 275 Trophy-R is in no small part due to some extreme cutting of weight, with most of the sound absorbing and insulating materials removed, the back seats ditched in favour of a cross strut bar, a smaller battery fitted, single-piece polycarbonate Recaros in place of the front seats, no rear screen wiper, no radio and no AirCon.
There will be 250 Mégane Renaultsport 275 Trophy-Rs built – 30 of which are heading for the UK – with the order book open from today at a price of £36,430.
The first look at the Mégane Renaultsport 275 Trophy-R will be at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this month.
