Renault launches cheapo Twingo
Wed, 07 Jan 2009The Renault Twingo is a car we had to do without in the UK for years. Renault never thought it worthwhile bringing this slightly odd-ball car to the UK. Many of us drove it on holidays in Europe, where it was a mainstay of holiday rental fleets for years, but it never crossed the channel.
But that changed with the latest version of the Twingo, and Renault has now announced a new, entry-level model – The Freeway.
New entry-level Renault Twingo - The Freeway
The new Renault Twingo Freeway is priced at a very measly £6,995, undercutting the sector leader, the KA, by over £800, but despite the low price tag the Freeway gets a pretty impressive list of standard features, including ABS, brake-assist and Electronic Brake Distribution. It also gets electric windows, tinted glass, central locking and a CD player. Not a bad spec for a very cheap car.
But not only is the Freeway cheap to buy, it is cheap to insure, with an anticipated insurance group of a lowly 2E. Colour choices are fairly limited (there are only five – Capsicum Red, Mercury, Pearl Black, Tempest and Blaze), and a bunch of the extras are pretty twee, such as door handle graphics, racing stripes and a chequered flag door graphic. Lovely.
Still, in these straightened times, a half-decent runaround for under £7k is not to be sneezed at.
