Saab 9-4X Revealed

It’s nice to see that Saab are getting back to being a maker of cars rather than a pawn of GM, and the reveal this afternoon of the Saab 9-4X marks the second new model in 2010 for Saab, even though both the Saab 9-5 and the Saab 9-4X have been on the horizon for what seems like forever.

And, of course, after years (buried) under the GM umbrella  Saab’s products are going to be GM based, at least for now. So what we have with the Saab 904X is a Saab-ised Cadillac SRX, but that’s not too bad a thing. The SRX is more than half-decent.

What the SRX is missing though is a diesel option. So the Saab 9-4x is going to come to market with just petrol lumps on offer, which isn’t going to do it many favours. What is on offer is a ‘Performance’ option in the 2.8 litre, twin-turbo V6, which delivers 300bhp and gets an adaptive, six-speed auto ‘box.

Saab are promising that the 9-4X will offer car-like driving dynamics, advanced Saab XWD, a Saab DriveSense Adaptive Chassis and a spacious and driver-focused cabin. Which all sounds very promising. As does the spec list, which is comprehensive.

We have no idea on price yet, and the 9-4X won’t enter the market place in the UK and Europe until August 2011, although it will be launched in the US three months before. There is a second engine on offer in the US – a 261bhp 3.0-litre – although we’re not sure it’s going to be on offer here.

Despite having no prices, and the 9-4X not launching in the UK until August 2011, Saab has lots to say on the new 9-4X. If you want all the bumph check out the 2011 Saab 9-4X press release.

And if you want to see the 9-4X any time soon you’ll have to trot off to the Los Angeles Motor Show next month.
