Scuola Politecnica di Design Milan 2008

Tue, 05 Aug 2008

The Scuola Politecnica di Design in Milan, Italy, held the annual exhibition of its Master's course in Transportation Design this past June. Done in collaboration with Alfa Romeo, this year's final presentation was attended by Lorenzo Ramaciotti, Head of Styling for Fiat Group Automobiles and Maserati. The final thesis projects presented by the 15 students on the course answered a brief to design the next flagship sedan from Alfa Romeo. The resulting nine models, developed with the assistance of designers from the Style Center based in Arese (Milan) and Mario Favilla, Director of the Master's course, envision the modern interpretation of Alfa Romeo's long and distinguished legacy of sporty yet elegant sedans.

Camenae
Ryu Seung-Wook
In Roman mythology, the Camenae were goddesses of springs and fresh water. Fluidity, stretched lines and flowing surfaces are the key features in this proposal developed by Korean student Ryu Seung-Wook. The two and a half volume architecture emphasizes the sporty feeling and allows more space inside. The elongated hood and smooth lines on the side give the volume its dynamic character.

Coelus
Ian Bunjak
Coelus is a four-door sports sedan concept which blends purity and seduction, dynamism and latent power into a bold and muscular architecture. The sporting lines are accentuated by the aggressive hood. The main feature line of the car runs backwards from the nose: a broken shoulder flowing under the cabin glazing line. This is picked up again in the arch of the rear haunch and also in the bottom line of the concave surface at the base of the door.

Tessa
Murat Atvur and Adam Denning
The Tessa is a three volume, muscular flagship concept which expresses styling cues from key segments of the Alfa Romeo line up from the 60s and 70s, such as the Giulietta and the Giulia coupé 1300. The harmonious design elements from those vehicles were then combined with the modern feeling of Alfa Romeo's 8C Competizione to create a seamlessly elegant package.

Phoenix
Iulian Bumbu
This concept combines dynamic lines which flow over the entire body with a peculiar graphic approach. As a result of his research, the face of Phoenix expresses its strong character through intersections and parallel lines around the legendary Alfa Romeo scudetto. Viewed from the rear three quarter, the upper fender line dips down alongside the body before raising and forming the rear haunch. This is reminiscent of  the Buick Invicta showcar seen in Beijing this year.

Orbita
Mark Salerno and Tulay Engin
This concept proposal blends the dynamic elegance of a fast coupé with the executive luxury of a four-door sedan. The Orbita's sculptural body has its inspiration rooted in very classical references of beauty and statuary proportions. Thanks to a high waistline and stretched window glazing, this proposal expresses power, emotion and controlled sportiness.
