The Skoda Octavia gets 4x4 and DSG 'box

We had a shout out for Skoda and what they do to make VW product their own when we ran story the other day on the new advert for the Skoda vRS, which shows how individual and inspired Skoda now are. Most of the time, anyway.

Not only are Skodas inspired and individual, they are also something of a bargain compared to their VW brethren. That harks back to the pre-VW reputation but also to the need for VW to be seen as the ‘Best’ of the bunch. All that does is give canny buyers – and those with a love of individuality – a big bonus.

So news that Skoda are to add a 4×4 platform to the Octavia and Superb shouldn’t make you ask ‘How much?’ – because you know the price point will be decent – but rather ’How good?’. And it is, with the new 4×4 Octavia Estate coming in at just £21,705.

With winter upon us you’d almost think Skoda had planned the release of a 4×4 platform. And it’s a clever platform for the Octavia and Superb as the Haldex system shoves 96% of the power to the front wheels under normal circumstances, only moving that to the rear wheels as grip is lost.

Which means you get all the advantages of a 4×4 platform but without most of the fuel penalties which usually go with all wheel drive. Also introduced is an automatic twin-clutch DSG ‘box on the 2.0 TDI CR 140bhp engine.

Lots of sense and good price points.
