The Skoda Superb Estate

We got the launch of the Skoda Superb Estate at the Frankfurt Motor Show back in September, a month or so after Skoda did the usual tease with the Superb Estate. As we said at the time, it makes you wonder why people buy more expensive ‘Prestige’ estates when the Superb offers so much. I guess it’s just badge-snobbery. And we’re as guilty as the rest of you.

Skoda say the Superb Estate is the “…most luxurious and most practical car ever to wear the famous winged arrow badge.”, and we find it quite hard to disagree. It offer s lot of good-looking, well built and well equipped car for the money.

There are three petrol and three diesel engines on offer ranging from the 1.4 TSI to the 3.6 V6 with a choice of manual or DSG auto ‘boxes and a choice of two or four wheel drive (gearbox and drivetrain options are model dependent).

You get en electrically operated boot mechanism (the boot is a massive 633 litres seats up and 1,865 litres seats down) which cleverly lights the load area and the area around to make things easy. There is also the option of a variable boot floor where the boot slides out over the bumper for easy loading.

Prices are very competitive, with a premium over the Superb hatch of between £1150 and £1350, making the Superb Estate available from around £17,500. Skoda are expecting to see the Superb Estate mop up around a third of all Superb sales from 2010 onwards. For our money it should be more.
