Stirling Moss Porsche RS61 crash at Monterey
Sat, 14 Aug 2010The Stirling Moss Porsche RS61 – pranged at Monterey
How long is it since Stirling Moss fell down a lift shaft? And how old is he? Yep, it’s just five months and the man is turned 80. But five months is more than enough time in the world of Stirling Moss to recover from a minor inconvenience like falling dwon a lift shaft, so he’d planned to go racing this weekend. But it all went a bit Pete Tong.
Stirling’s plans for this weekend were to race his Porsche RS61 – which he bought at the Amelia Island sale in Florida this year – at the Monterey Motorsports Reunion at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The Porsche RS61 – which Stirling raced in the ’60s – was bought by Stirling just 4 days after his accident in March for a record $1.7 million. Stirling was certainly keen to make sure he got this particular RS61.
But the plans for a return to racing this weekend were scuppered when a fellow constestant ran in to Stirling on his out lap. Stirling had slipped on to the grass after getting a wheel off during the lap, but had kept control. Unfortunately a second car, also on its out lap, left the circuit and crashed in to Stirling. Fortunately Stirling was unhurt but the RS61 wasn’t, and will be out of action for some time for repairs.
Stirling wasn’t a happy bunny after the prang but intends to be back racing the Porsche RS61 in 2011. The year in which he’ll reach 82.
Quite a man.
