Subaru BRZ STI teased
Mon, 05 Aug 2013Subaru are teasing the BRZ STI (pictured)
The Subaru BRZ – the Subaru take on the Toyota GT86 – has the potential to be a lot more hardcore than its current setup allows. That has led to much speculation that Subaru will bolt a turbo on to the BRZ’s Boxer engine to produce a BRZ with something closer to the 300bhp we originally expected.
In fact, at the end of 2011, Subaru in the US confirmed there would be a turbo version of the engine in the BRZ, although they fell short of actually confirming the BRZ itself would get it as an option, but at the end of 2012 we had a report that the BRZ will get the turbo engine and that it will deliver 280bhp.
But still nothing is official on the BRZ Turbo, but it does look as if Subaru are close to delivering a more hardcore version of the BRZ with a teaser image )above) of the BRZ STI which has appeared on their Japanese website.
Subaru are giving nothing away – apart from a ‘Coming Soon’ and ‘Purity of Handling’ splash pages – but it’s clear that even if the STI hasn’t got a turbo to play with that it is likely to get suspension and brake upgrades, perhaps something of a body kit and maybe a tweak of the ECU.
We already know Subaru will be offering performance and handling upgrades for the BRZ in the UK, along with a bigger allocation of cars, so we can but hope that the BRZ STI is a bit more than just a tweak.
With a tease already going on, it seems likely the Subaru BRZ STI is heading for a debut at either the Frankfurt or Tokyo Motor Show in the next few months.
