Subaru BRZ teased ahead of Tokyo

We’ve seen speculation on the Subaru BRZ – Subaru’s version of the Toyota FT-86 – increase hugely as the arrival of the production version of the BRZ approaches at the Tokyo Motor Show in just a few weeks.

The general consensus is that the BRZ will get something around 295bhp – after a Subaru spokesman said the BRZ will have ‘less than 300bhp’ – but we really have no idea how much more powerful the BRZ will be than the FT-86.

So when we got an email in this morning with a teaser image for the production-ready BRZ, we thought maybe Subaru has decided to put us out of our misery. But no.

What we get is pretty much what we already know. The Subaru BRZ will get a new 2.0 litre four-pot, horizontally opposed engine. It’s based on Subaru’s third generation FR lump, but has wider and shorter bores which delivers more power. And it gets Toyota direct injection.

Suspension is by way of double wishbones at the back and you can have either a six-speed manual or six-speed auto ‘box.

And that’s about all we get. Except the teaser photo at the top.

Subaru Advanced Tourer Concept

In the same bumph is news that Subaru will debut their Advanced Tourer Concept, a Subaru hybrid based on Toyota tech.

It has a downsized 1.6 litre turbo and electric motor, and power gets to the wheels through a CVT ‘box. It gets regenerative braking to recharge the lithium ion batteries.

Subaru say the Advanced Tourer Hybrid provides a 50 per cent increase in fuel efficiency compared to their current models, and it looks like Subaru has plans to introduce hybrids across the range.

The Advanced Tourer can run in pure EV mode, but Subaru has at least managed to keep something of their USP – the Advanced Tourer is all wheel drive.

No doubt, with the Tokyo Motor Show kicking off on 30th November, we’ll get more on the BRZ and Advanced Tourer from Subaru before long.
