Supercar Sunday is a high-octane breakfast treat in Southern California
Thu, 03 Jun 2010WITH VIDEO -- There's always something cool to see at Supercar Sunday, usually a few hundred cool things to see.
"[It's] the perfect way to spend a Sunday morning," collector Bruce Meyer said, driving up in his '32 Ford. "Get out early, enjoy the morning, get back before the family knows you're gone."
It's one of a handful of casual, early morning weekend shows in Southern California that are worth getting up for before breakfast. In the tradition of Cars and Coffee and Donut Derelicts, you never know what you're going to see at Supercar Sunday. There are supercars, of course, because if you own a Ferrari, Lamborghini or Viper, you pretty much have to take it here to justify owning it. But there are also zillions of other cool things that just trickle in without warning: two Ford RS200s, a Mercedes-Benz 300SL, a Lamborghini 400GT.
While it runs every week, the last Sunday of each month is when Supercar Sunday has featured marques. Recent marques included Ferrari, with more than 125 cars from Maranello showing up in March, and last month's theme, where members of the Petersen Automotive Museum's Checkered Flag Club brought their favorite rides.
We went on May 30, when the theme was hot rods, and there were plenty of them: lake-racing flathead Fords, street-cruising coupes and any number of lumpy cammed hot rods from days gone by. Muscle cars fit in well with the hot-rod theme, too. While the theme days bring out a lot of examples of the featured marques that might not normally be seen, no one's going to complain if your interesting car is from another era or another manufacturer. All are welcome.
"You'll have the world's most expensive cars parked next to primered project cars, imports, rally cars, you name it, from 90-year-old guys down to 15-year-old kids with permits [who came here with] their dads," founder and mover and shaker Dustin Troyan said. "We've got guys who own $50 million collections down to guys who don't own cars but are enthusiasts, and we all chitchat and talk. We have a great time."
Troyan is the mastermind behind Supercar Sunday. He started it at a strip mall, and when it outgrew that location, he moved it to the northwest corner of the parking lot at the Westfield Promenade Mall in Woodland Hills. Troyan is a tireless promoter, organizing a charity named Motor4Toys (www.motor4toys.com) that for six years has gathered gifts for kids who might not be on Santa's list. Troyan is working on a charity named Motor4America that will be aimed at veterans and service members.
Supercar Sunday (www.supercarsunday.com) takes place from 7 to 11 a.m. at the Westfield Promenade Mall, 6100 Topanga Canyon Blvd., Woodland Hills, Calif. Exit the 101 at Topanga Canyon Boulevard and go north a few blocks till you see the Auto Gallery signs in front of all of the cars.
