The Pontiac Firebird hits the streets: Autoweek archives
Thu, 13 Oct 2011
In 1967, General Motors launched its answer to the Ford Mustang--the Chevrolet Camaro. Based on that same unibody chassis, Pontiac rolled out its entrant, the Firebird.
In this issue of Autoweek from February 1967, we have the pictures and engine specs on the "new" Pontiac. Base models were equipped with an overhead-cam six-cylinder engine. The top of the line was a 400-cubic-inch V8.
The Pontiac Firebird and Trans Am were produced until 2002. The potential of a comeback, based on the revived Camaro in 2010, was squashed when General Motors shut down Pontiac in October 2010. But some privateers have taken it upon themselves to create a modern Trans Am from the new Camaro.
