The last Volvo XC90 rolls off the production line to make way for the all new 2015 XC90

The last Volvo XC90 rolls off the production line in Sweden.

When the current Volvo XC90 arrived in 2002 it staked a claim as the perfect family SUV, a role it’s managed to hang on to – more or less – even though the XC90 is now long past its sell-by date. That’s because the 2002 XC90 was so cleverly conceived in the first place, with family-friendly ease of access to the back row of seats, inflatable side curtains for all three rows of seats, anĀ integrated adjustable booster cushion for children, safety belt tensioners for all seats, easy to drive, decent looking and almost classless.

That innovative mix of abilities made the XC90 a favourite of the chattering classes in the UK, a success that was mirrored around the world as Volvo sold seemingly evermore XC90s – even during Volvo’s darkest days – to the point where it has sold 636,143 in its twelve year life, outsripping Volvo’s original expectations in the process.

But now, with the all new Volvo XC90 looming on the horizon – and looking like it will be just as innovative – it’s time to end production of the current XC90 in Sweden, and the last model has rolled off the production line at Volvo’sĀ Torslanda Plant and been driven straight to the Volvo Museum in Gothenburg.

Now for the all new XC90.
