This bus concept brightens up journeys with transparent LCD screens
Thu, 12 Dec 2013Designer Tad Orlowski has explored how technology could shape public transit vehicle design with his new ‘Willie' bus concept, which trades windows and body panels transparent LCD screens.
With static advertising space replced with LCD screens the bus is transformed into a mobile billboard that display not only advertising but also information such as route plans, weather reports and suggestions for tourists. They could also have touch functions, allowing passengers to interact with the displays.
"In recent years we've witnessed vast changes in the way different sorts of information reaches the listener or the viewer," says Orlowski. "I wanted to illustrate how new technologies can diversify the functioning of everyday life. The project should be considered not only from a stylistic point of view but also as an attempt to change the existing order."
The bus' flat surfaces are perfect for screens but their transparency reveals a complex, web-like organic inner frame from which all the components are hung.
The external boxiness is alleviated by wing mirrors that peel away from the A-pillars and a rear end inspired by water, with concentric ripples that incorporate the bus number and rear lamps.
Orlowski has apparently already had two large European cities express their interest in the concept. We'd love to see some of this interactive moving architecture on our streets of the future.
