Toyota GT86 & Subaru BRZ getting Cosworth Performance upgrades (video)
Sun, 18 May 2014Cosworth promise power upgrades for the FA 20 engine
Ever since the Toyota GT86 and Subaru BRZ arrived as ‘affordable’ sports cars with a focus on the dynamics rather than outright power, there’s been endless claims and rumours that more power is on the way. As far back as 2011, Subaru in the US confirmed that a turbo version of the BRZ’s 2.0 litre FA20 Boxer engine was under development although, to be fair, they didn’t say it was actually heading for the BRZ.
And just last year, Subaru teased what we thought could be a more powerful BRZ STI, but that turned out to be a BRZ tS with go faster bits but no more actual power.
It’s been a similar story with the Toyota GT86 over the last few years, with a GT86 TRD offering the expectation of more power (but not delivering any), and the GT86 GRMN FR Sports actually producing an appealing 325bhp – but only as a concept.
Now it looks like Cosworth are stepping in to fill the power void with power upgrades for the GT86 and BRZ this summer.
Cosworth are promising a Performance Parts range under the heading of ‘FA-20′ which will provide:
…complete performance upgrade kits that have been designed and validated as a system to provide guaranteed levels of power and reliability.
Which all sounds very promising, although so far Cosworth are declining to go in to details.
Let’s hope this isn’t another false dawn for a more powerful BRZ and GT86.
