The Toyota Yaris Hybrid will cost less than £15k

Toyota has announced that the 2012 Toyota Yaris Hybrid will cost ‘under’ £15,000, with first customer cars arriving in July.

Unlike much of the rest of the world, the UK is not getting the more compact Prius C. Instead, we have a much better option – the Toyota Yaris Hybrid – which we now know will cost ‘under’ £15,000.

Toyota say that the Yaris Hybrid will be the most reasonably priced Hybrid on the market in the UK, providing market-leading technology at an affordable price. Although unless you do big mileage – or you want to polish your green halo – you’d be much better off with a regular, petrol-engined Yaris, which starts at £11k.

The Yaris Hybrid gets a downsized version of the 1.5 litre HSD powertrain in the Prius, which gets a more compact electric motor and battery pack, saving 20 per cent in weight.

The plus for the Yaris Hybrid – apart from a green halo – is the 79g/km emissions – which means no road tax – and a BIK rate of just 10 per cent. With 99bhp to play with, the Yaris Hybrid should be nippy enough, although if you do give it some wellie on a regular basis you won’t get any better mileage than the 1.0 VVT-i Yaris, which does 59mpg.

The Toyota Yaris Hybrid will be on Toyota’s stand at the Geneva Motor Show in March and first customer cars will arrive in July.
