Toyota sticky pedal fiasco recall – now it’s Europe

Thu, 28 Jan 2010

Just one of the Toyota models recalled in the US. Full list below.

Toyota has been having huge problems with sticking accelerator issues on their cars in the US. It seems a faulty mechanism does – under certain circumstances – stick on or return too slowly. This has lead to a number of accidents in the US and Toyota is recalling 2.3 million cars in the US in an attempt to fix the issue.

But the issue is wider than this. Toyota has had to stop making the affected cars as they had no modified parts to fit. It’s now being reported that their supplier – CTS Corporation – has come up with a modified part, but that in itself raises more issues. Apparently CTS has an annual production capacity of 2 million units, so with 2.3 million US cars already potentially unsafe to drive it’s unclear how Toyota are going to solve this problem.

And now it looks as if there are cars in Europe that could contain the malfunctioning mechanism. Toyota say they don’t yet have numbers for how many cars are affected in Europe and nor are they sure which models suffer the problem (that’s reassuring), but the cars affected in the US are:

But if you lump in the potential in Europe to the acknowledged numbers in the US you have at least a couple of years of production just to rectify the existing issue, without figuring in to the equation the requirements for new car builds.

Not surprisingly Toyota’s share price has dropped over this issue. By almost 10%.
