Toyota teases new 2014 Aygo city car

Thu, 20 Feb 2014

This is the initial teaser image of the new 2014 Toyota Aygo, set to make its first public appearance at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show next month.

The Japanese firm is yet to reveal any details on its new city car, but we do know that it has once again been developed in conjunction with Peugeot and the French firm’s latest 108 compact urban hatchback.

Just like the previous Aygo, the new car will share its chassis and engine line-up with the latest Peugeot.

As such, expect a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine emitting under 90g/km CO2, as well as a larger, 1.2-litre three-cylinder unit putting out less than 100g/km CO2, making all Aygo variants road tax free.

This strong turn of efficiency is helped by the car’s low kerb weight. Peugeot has confirmed its lightest 108 model will tip the scales at just 840kg, so we expect similar figures for the 2014 Aygo given it will share the same underpinnings.

The Aygo should retain its easy manoeuvrability – one of the features that made the original such a good city car.

The new vehicle is expected to grow in size slightly to around 3.7m long, but remain around 1.6m wide. As a result we expect the all-new Aygo will still be as easy to park as its predecessor, but more practical, too.

From what we know of the Peugeot, that car’s boot space stands at 196 litres, rising to 750 litres with the 50:50 split folding rear seats down.

If the Toyota were to mimic these figures, that would make the 2014 Aygo’s boot 57 litres larger than before.

To increase its appeal in the hotly contested city car segment, expect the Japanese carmaker to add more customisation options to the new Aygo.

Upgraded equipment should help here as well, so don’t rule out the addition of Toyota’s Touch and Go multimedia and sat-nav system on top-spec models.

Safety should also be massively improved over its predecessor – a welcome upgrade after the current Aygo, C1 and 107 models were reassessed and downgraded in 2012 to just three Euro NCAP safety stars in official crash testing.

Details are currently scarce surrounding the new car, with this shadowed teaser picture the first image released of the car – we can just about make out Toyota’s current corporate face, however.

Pricing and on sale information will be released closer to the car’s debut at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show next month, but expect the new car to hit UK dealerships later this year priced from around £8,000.
