Turkey is all about East meets West. The Turkish Grand Prix was about two different comings together – that of the fight between Red Bull and McLaren, but more significantly the meeting of Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel, who managed to meet on the track – in what looked like a Vettel mistake – whilst running first and second.
That mistake left the McLarens of Button and Hamilton to take first and second place in the race, despite Webber managing to keep his Red Bull going after the coming together.
But the ‘Meetings’ weren’t over, with McLaren drivers Button and Hamilton risking the same fate as the Red Bull drivers when Button decided – despite team orders to conserve fuel - to put a move on Hamilton for first place. He nearly made it stick too, but it soon looked as if there had been severe ear-bashings dished out on the team radio as the two settled in to a rhythm for a one-two McLaren finish, and a podium shared with Mark Webber who managed to finish in third, ahead of the improving Michael Schumacher.
And that is really the story of the 2010 Turkish Grand Prix. Red Bull and McLaren are well ahead of the rest. Red Bull make more mistakes than McLaren. Ferrari – in their 800th Grand Prix – showed how out of touch with the leaders they are at the moment and Mercedes are improving.
