UPDATE: Jack Roush hospitalized after crashing plane, injuries not life-threatening
Wed, 28 Jul 2010NASCAR team owner and Mustang guru Jack Roush crashed while landing his plane on Tuesday in Oshkosh, Wis. He's in serious but stable condition and his injuries are not life-threatening.
Roush was landing his Hawker Beechcraft Premium jet at the Oshkosh airport about 6:15 p.m. local time when the accident happened. He was there for the EAA AirVenture show.
Roush, 68, is the co-owner of Roush-Fenway Racing and chairman of Roush Enterprises.
Roush Fenway Racing president Geoff Smith acknowledged some injuries to Jack Roush, including facial lacerations, and added that surgery is possible. “But he walked out of the plane,” Smith said via text message to the Associated Press.
Spokesman John Clark said Roush was expected to be hospitalized for several days. Roush also crashed a plane in 2002 in Alabama.
The jet made hard contact on landing and cracked the fuselage. Brenda Strickland, a friend of Roush, was the only other person on board.
Bob Margolis, who's writing a book about Roush, said the two-time Cup-winning owner was not seriously hurt. “Apparently he bumped his head and they were taken to a local hospital for observation, but I've been told they are OK,” he said.
Roush is an avid aviator, owns aircraft and his performance company has customized Mustangs with fighter-plane themes. He began his career as an engineer at Ford in 1964 before founding in 1976 what would grow into Roush Industries. He started Roush Racing in 1988 and won the Cup championship in 2003 and 2004.
A statement from the airport said, “They exited the aircraft following the accident [and] were transported to local hospitals, with Roush in serious but stable condition and Strickland with nonlife-threatening injuries. The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the accident.”
NASCAR CEO Brian France said in a statement:
"On behalf of the NASCAR industry our hearts and prayers go out to Jack Roush, the Roush family and Roush Fenway Racing. All of us are looking forward to a full and speedy recovery.:
