VW CrossBlue Coupe Concept heading for Shanghai
Thu, 18 Apr 2013Volkswagen are heading to the Shanghai Motor Show with a new SUV concept as car makers strive to satisfy car buyer’s lust for rugged cars to prowl the urban landscape.
But the VW CrossBlue Concept doesn’t seem to be a car that fits in to the fad for compact SUVs, rather it’s a full-size SUV that appears to be a coupe version of the VW CrossBlue Concept we saw earlier this year in Detroit.
So far we only have a sketch of the CrossBlue Coupe, and you can be pretty sure it won’t be quite as ‘Coupe’ as the sketches indicate when it does turn up in Shanghai this weekend; think more Audi Q7 than Mercedes GLA.
At 4.89 metres long the CrossBlue Coupe is bigger than a Touareg and we expect – just like the CrossBlue – this is an SUV heading to North America to satiate their appetite for full-size SUVs.
Power comes from a turbo V6 and a pair of electric motors – which drive the back wheels – which delivers a fulsome 409bhp which is enough to get to 62mph in 5.9 seconds, and thanks to the electric motors the CrossBlue Coupe is capable of running in EV mode only for up to 20 miles and official economy of 94mpg.
With a coupe roof we don’t expect the CrossBlue Coupe to get the 7-seat layout of the CrossBlue, but VW are obviously pitching this as an X6 competitor with dramatic looks and decent performance.
