VW Polo GTI (2010) Revealed
Wed, 17 Feb 2010The Volkswagen Polo GTI will debut at Geneva
The latest version of the Volkswagen Polo is a very good car. But fans of VW have been looking forward to the hot version of the latest Polo – the VW Polo GTI. Well, wait no longer. It’s going to be at the Geneva Motor Show in a couple of weeks.
In many ways the 2010 Polo GTI is more the spiritual successor to the car that started the whole hot-hatch love affair – the original Golf GTI – than is the current Golf. It’s compact – just as the original Golf GTI was – but it packs a meaty punch and promises to be a hoot.
The Polo GTI comes with VW’s 1.4 litre supercharged and turbocharged four pot offering up 178bhp and getting a seven-speed DSG twin-clutch ‘box to row things along very nicely. You even get a set of flappy paddles. In fact the Polo’s smaller size should mean this setup delivering a 0-60mph in under 7 seconds, giving its big brother the current Golf GTI a real run for its money.
The suspension on the Polo GTI has been lowered by 15mm with stiffened springs and dampers which should help the handling, and the hot-hatch makeover is relatively subtle with 17″ alloys, twin exhausts and a low-key bodykit. The only downside for us is VW’s love of tartan trim on the interior.
The VW Polo GTI looks set to be a cracking car. Expect to see it hit the roads by the Summer with prices starting from around £17.5k.
